A FUN day to raise money for the emergency service which helped youngsters following a bus crash has been held in north Durham.

The family sports day is being held on Saturday at South Moor Sports and Social Club, near Stanley.

Two drivers and 28 children were taken to hospital after two buses carrying children to their schools crashed at nearby Oxhill on June 3.

The event was organised to raise money for the Great North Air Ambulance, which airlifted some of the most seriously injured to hospital.

It was attended by around 200 people and raised around £2,000

Vicky Walton, one of the event organisers, said: “It was really good and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

“The children all really loved it and we had Minnie Mouse who did the sponsored walk with the little ones.

“We did have showers but did not let it spoil the day and just moved inside and underneath the gazebos. It was all for a good cause.”

The day included a tug-of-war, a rainbow race and a sponsored walk for little ones, as well as plenty of sporting activities for everyone to join in.

In the evening there local band PVC performed and there was entertainment, bingo, games and a quiz.
