Final score: Yeovil Town Ladies 1 Sunderland Ladies 2

SUNDERLAND boss Mick Mulhern says his team need to keep their feet on the ground after edging closer to the FA Women’s Super League title with victory at Yeovil.

The Lady Black Cats took the lead after six minutes when Kiera Ramshaw scored her third goal in as many games after good work from Beth Mead.

But they were pegged back after 22 minutes when Helen Bleazard’s corner was headed back across goal by Katie Sherwood and Wiltshire pounced for her eighth of the season.

Mulhern’s side struggled to break Yeovil down but found a way through midway through the second half when a Victoria Greenwell corner was met by the head of Stephanie Bannon who headed home.

A minute later Bleazard rattled the woodwork for the home side but in the end it didn’t matter and the Lady Black Cats edged closer to the WSL 2 title much to the delight of Mulhern.

“I thought we played very well today and so did Yeovil, it’s a difficult place to come to,” he said.

“Sarah (Wiltshire) wasn’t particularly doing a great deal, and typical Sarah, she pops up in the box following a set piece and that’s what happens.

“Apart from that I thought we were in control of the game and in the second half we gathered momentum and the second goal was always coming.

“I’ve done this job for a long time now and the last thing you do now is get carried away, we haven’t won it yet; it is one game at a time, and it is on to the next game against Donny (Doncaster Belles) and we will see how we go.”

And, despite not being able to hang on for a point Yeovil boss Jamie Sherwood believes his side handled themselves admirably against a team he thinks will be champions.

“As I said in my programme notes, I think Sunderland will be champions, I think they’ve shown today why they will be champions,” he said.

“They’ve handled the pressure we as a club put on them, we had chances to score against them when we were on top but we didn’t take them and they took their opportunities when they had them.

“Sarah (Wiltshire) has nipped in there again with her poacher’s instinct on the six-yard line and a nice flick on, but without the other players around her, she’s not going to get those.”
