A WOMAN was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after falling from her horse, which reared as a motorcycle drove by.

A police spokesman said the accident happened in Offerton, near Wearside Golf Club, in Coxhoe Green, Houghton-le-Spring, on Wearside, at 5.25pm on Tuesday (September 30).

The spokesman said: “At around 5.25pm on Tuesday police received a report of a woman falling from a horse after a passing motorbike has caused the horse to rear.

“The woman fell from the horse and was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"The woman, aged 40, suffered serious abdominal injuries after being trampled by the horse.”

The woman was treated at the scene by a North East Ambulance Service paramedic and the team for the Great North Air Ambulance (GNAA), who airlifted her to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Police are keen to speak to the motorcyclist who was riding the blue and white off-road style machine. He is believed to have been wearing a white helmet.
