GUESTS shelled out about £66,000 for charity at an annual society ball.

The annual Oyster Festival, at Hardwick Hall Hotel near Sedgefield, County Durham, attracted more than 1,000 guests from across the region and raised funds for Butterwick Hospice in Bishop Auckland

John Adamson, Managing Director of Ramside Estates, which owns the hotel, said: “It’s fantastic to see just how many people love the event.

“Festival goers have always been supportive of our nominated charity and we’re thrilled to have raised much needed funds for Butterwick Hospice, which will help support the fantastic work they do in the Durham Dales and Sedgefield areas.”

Clair McGregor, fundraising team leader, said: “As fundraising is essential for the hospice to be able to serve the local community, we were thrilled to have a presence at such a prestigious event.

“The festival guests were extremely generous and we’re thrilled to have raised such a significant amount which will go directly to patient care and services to help improve the lives of people in the communities we serve.”

The festival, on Friday, September 19, kicked off with a performance from JJ Galway band and laughter was provided by Eastenders actor Terry Alderton.

American soul supremo Alexander O’Neal headlined the event and guests enjoyed a Fruits de Mer menu.
