TEENAGERS will be tested this week as part of half-term activities based on the Hunger Games.

The ‘arena’ training is suitable for children aged 12 to 16 and is taking place at Wild North Discovery, in Stanhope.

Participants will represent their districts and be trained by survival expert, Bruce Ferguson, who has been sharing his survival skills for 30 years.

Mr Ferguson is qualified to teach bushcrafts through the Institute for Outdoor Learning and is DBS cleared.

Training will be based at Harehope Quarry, Frosterley and Hamsterley Forest where participants will learn everything from developing their hunting and tracking skills to treating wounds and illnesses using wild plants.

They will also discover how to make a fire, a shelter and cook on an open fire.

Tomorrow (Tuesday October 28), will cover the topics of fire making, cooking, water and wild medicine while Thursday’s arena day will teach students about shelter, cordage and knots and wild food.

A maximum of six participants can take part on each day and costs £30 a day.
