THE Mayor of Barnard Castle's Christmas cards will have a personal touch this year after he launched the first competition for local school children to design them.

More than 300 cards were submitted from the town’s Green Lane C of E Primary, Montalbo Nursery and Primary, St. Mary’s RC and Teesdale schools after the town council launched the competition in July.

Mayor John Blissett announced the three winners at Green Lane Primary School this morning (Tuesday November 25), after judging all 346 entries.

The Key Stage 1 winner was six-year-old Scarlett Daniels, of Green Lane Primary School, who was crowned alongside fellow pupil, Lewis Kipling, nine, who won the Key Stage 2 category.

The Key Stage 3 winning card belonged to Alice Crossling, 12, of Teesdale School.

Cllr Blissett said: “When it came up I thought ‘This is going to be easy’ but they proved me wrong.

“The quantity and the quality of all the entrants was absolutely spot on and it was both the mayoress and myself had one devil of a job to pick out the winners.”
