AN INTERNATIONAL cross country star has been honoured with a district council award.

Hambleton District Council handed out the award in a show of support for Marc Scott and his coach Ken Harker, after Mr Scott’s silver medal for Team GB in Bulgaria.

Mr Scott, 21, and his coach were presented with their awards by chairman of the authority, Cllr John Prest.

The Northallerton athlete took up running as a child, competing around the country and for his school – and often training on the Civic Centre’s Stone Cross playing fields.

He has tried middle distance, long distance, fell running and cross country - and was supported by the council under its talented sportsperson scheme.

He is currently studying at the University of Tulsa in the USA which helps him with his training.

Earlier this month he competed in the European Cross Country trials at Sefton Park, Liverpool - and as a result of his performance was selected for Team GB .

That selection took him to the European Cross Country Championships in Samorov, Bulgaria last weekend where he was placed seventh and helped secure his team’s silver medal.

Cllr Prest congratulated Mr Scott and also recognised Mr Harker’s input.

He said: “Behind every successful sportsperson there is a support network including a coach who provides advice, support, and experience.

“We are delighted to recognise both Marc and Ken – and present them with special awards from the district council.”
