A CHURCH community centre has been praised for how well it is run and the services it offers to the people of Spennymoor.

The St Paul’s Centre has been granted a level two Hallmark award, just ten months after it secured level one accreditation for managing and operating the building at a nationally recognised standard.

The Hallmark scheme, organised by Action with Communities in Rural England and operated locally by Durham Community Action, rewards community centres and village halls for good practice.

The level two award criteria focused on health, safety, security and licences and the management team was praised for its policies and processes.

Barbara Hind, community buildings advisor for Durham Community Action, said: “The hall is very well looked after with equipment and furniture in very good condition, the general standard of the building and its decoration is very impressive and welcoming to users.”

She commended all committee members for their ongoing commitment and enthusiasm.

Maureen Aspey, chairman of the St Paul’s Centre management team, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded a level two Hallmark award in recognition of the way we run and manage the centre.

“The St Paul’s Centre offers a wide range of facilities and activities for local people and this award shows our commitment to making the centre a well run and integral part of the local community.”

In 2015 the St Paul's Centre will celebrate its fifth anniversary following a £450,000 refurbishment in 2010.

Its facilities include a cafe, function hall and meeting room and it hosts church and community activities including the arts, fitness, music, dance and children’s groups.
