A DEMENTIA Champion is setting up a support group to provide a place for those affected by the condition to make new friends.

Dorothy Bowman was one of the first people in Newton Aycliffe to undertake training with the Alzheimer’s Society to become a Dementia Friends Champion in October 2013.

Her aim was to quash myths and raise awareness of dementia, which can affect memory, attention language and problem solving skills.

However, last year Mrs Bowman was diagnosed with breast cancer and was unable to put as much energy into the cause as she had planned.

Now she is better she is raring to go and her own illness has strengthened her resolve.

“When I was going through my treatment there were days when I was too ill to leave the house and I felt cut off,” she said.

“Many people with dementia can feel lonely and isolated. I wanted to do something to help them, which is why I am setting up this group.

“The idea is to provide a place to socialise and find out more about dementia and the support available. Hopefully we can go on trips together too.”

The group, New Pathways Together, will hold its first meeting at Newton Aycliffe Youth and Community Centre on Wednesday, February 4, at 11am

Anyone affected by dementia, including family, carers, are welcome to attend, along with anyone wishing to find out more about the condition.
