Sedgefield Water Polo Club’s Under-14s section claimed their sixth tournament win out of six in 2014 at Lancaster.

There was a big entry of 14 teams for Under-13s from Yorkshire, Lancashire and the sole entry from Durham, Northumberland and Cleveland was Sedgefield.

The South Durham team started off with a dominant performance beating the host club Lancaster 7-1, which was followed by a comfortable 5-0 win against Manchester.

Bridgefield from Liverpool were next to feel the wrath of Sedgefield, who ran out 5-2 winners, and they then scored two late goals to secure a tough 5-3 win over Oldham team Royton.

Convincing wins over Blackpool (11-1) and Ripley (10-1) ended the group stages and saw Sedgefield progress to the quarter-finals.

The quarter-final was a very close affair with Manchester team Tydsley, but Sedgefield edged through 6-5.

In the semi-final Sedgefield were up against Bridgefield again but triumphed easier than the group game, winning 5-0.

In the final they were up against Rotherham for the fourth time this season at this age group and like the others Sedgefield's extra fitness and tight defence saw them win 6-4 and make it six victories from six tournaments for Sedgefield's Under-13s in 2014.

The Outstanding Player, Player of the Tournament and leading scorer was Michael Hampshire, 12, who is attending GB trials this month.

A second Sedgefield team also competed at the competition, which was made up of younger and less experienced players.

They produced some impressive displays to finish fourth in the plate.

The other members of the Sedgefield squad were Joseph and Isaac Boys, Niall Coulthard, Haydn Craggs, Kate Harrison, Kes and Charlie McEwan, Kyle and Ben Alderson, Hollie Turnbull, Jessica Webb, Poppy Stephenson, Jake Mendelson, Katy Fenton, Bartosz Czajczynski, Crystal Elliot, Mathew Taylor, and Daniel Millington.

The club is looking for new players aged 12 and under to join their talented squad, who are club swimmers or like swimming. Sedgefield does a lot of swimming training as it is very important for fitness to play this tough and exciting sport well.

The club is based at Newton Aycliffe Leisure centre and trains up to 11 hours per week. Fees range from £17 to £25 per month with free club shirts and hoodies.
