A STUDENT who plans to volunteer at an orphanage in Jamaica after her A-levels is fundraising to pay for the trip.

Karisha Francis, who is studying law, psychology and performing arts at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, in Darlington, is preparing for a gap year with the organisation Projects Abroad when she will work in an orphanage in Ocho Rios.

The student will travel to Jamaica in the summer, a place she has visited previously as she has family there.

Karisha will carry out general work in the orphanage, as well as helping the children with school work and extra activities.

She is aiming to raise £6,000 to fund her trip and has organised a number of activities to boost her total.

She said: "Having seen the poverty through the eyes of a local rather than a tourist, I just need to do something.

"It sounds cheesy but I really do want to make a difference even in some small way. In the orphanage there are not enough staff to give every child individual attention and affection.

"If I can do some good then it will all be worthwhile."
