EXOTIC performances and colourful creatures marked the Chinese New Year celebrations in a North-East town today (Thursday, February 19).

Children spent the morning getting creative with Chinese crafts in a workshop at Darlington Central Library before the celebrations moved outside.

Special guests The Moi Fa Lion Dance Team drew the crowds with a performance of the Lion Dance - a lively dance to music with acrobatics - at the Joseph Pease monument in the town centre.

Nick Wallis, Darlington Council’s cabinet member for leisure, welcomed the colourful scenes and said: “There are lots of opportunities in Darlington for people to get creative and join in the arts.

“I am delighted that the spectacle of Chinese New Year once again came to the town and that lots of people came out to support and join in the celebrations.”

2015 is the Year of the Goat in the Chinese calendar and the New Year period is the longest and most important holiday in China, spanning 15 days.
