CHILDREN who re-created their favourite literary characters for a World Book Day competition have been presented with their prizes.

As part of Darlington Library’s celebrations for the day, children across the borough were invited to draw their favourite characters to be in with the chance of winning a set of Monstrous Morals books penned by Northern Echo editor Peter Barron.

The winning entries included depictions of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter characters and Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat.

St Augustine’s School pupil Lili Vincz scooped the top prize in the over eight category, while the under eights competition was won by Lundin Cunningham followed by runners up Amelia Back and Wojciech Piszczek from Corporation Road Primary School.

They were presented with vouchers from Ian Hughes of the Art Shop in Darlington.

Vicky Langford, the library officer who organised the competition, said: “I am delighted by the quality of the children’s work and thank all those who have taken part.

“All the pictures are on display in the library reception area for everyone to see.”

An additional competition to guess how many books are in the Crown Street Library was won by seven-year-old year old Adon Hopkins who came closest with his estimate of 46,009. The actual number is 46,913.
