SHUTTERS on a shop front are bringing the past to life in a former industrial town.

It is 35 years since the steel industry closed in Consett, but many still have the memories it created.

Marlene Boyles, who owns the former bank on the corner of Taylor Street and Front Street, wanted brighten up her building and recognise the area’s heritage.

The building is used by Golden Pizza and front depicts the company offices while the sides show views of Front Street in years gone by.

She said: “When I started my research I felt it very important to have something relating to 40 Front Street and that area of the town.

“I had three shutters to do which required a lot of research.

“When I found the photograph of the CIC General Offices I was so impressed with the building I knew that had to be on the front shutter.

“I had come to work in Consett in the late 1960s but had never seen or was aware of the magnificence of the building which was in the middle of the steel works.”

The work was carried out by Shutter Media based in Middlesbrough.

Ehsan Teymouri, 41, and chef from Iran who, owns the takeaway business, said: “The customers are very happy to see the pictures on the shutters. They like the link to local history.”
