RETIRED teacher Jan Hodgson will be putting her best foot forward this summer - following in the footsteps of the Romans.

She is planning to stride out along Hadrian's Wall to raise funds for the Hambleton-based charity Herriot Hospice Homecare.

Jan, from Brompton, Northallerton, decided to take part in the charity walk after her sister, Elaine Wilkins, contacted her from her London home.

"We are both keen walkers and she asked me to come along on a walk she was doing. There will be a group of us all doing it for different charities," said Ms Hodgson.

The 58-year-old plans to spend two days doing the central 25-mile stretch of the wall and already has the support of local businesses Barkers department store and Osmotherley Walking Shop.

Her three grown-up sons and her builder husband Stuart are all helping with the fundraising. Anyone who wants to contribute or sponsor Jan is asked to call 01609-771485.
