tradiTonal jazz band the Swale Valley Stompers will celebrate 30 years of musical entertainment this weekend.

They will be joined by fans at their regular haunt, the Queen Catherine, in Osmotherley, near Northallerton, at 8.30pm on Sunday.

The band launched in 1977 with a line-up that included clarinetist Peter Edmonds, pianist Michael Harvey and John Crisp on trombone and vocals.

They still play with the Stompers, although the other founder members, including Alan Brunskill, Lenny Maxwell, Bob Tennant and George Pearson, have since died.

The line-up now includes Gerry Denning on trumpet, Robert Young on electric bass, David Reid on banjo and Mike Green on drums.

Mr Harvey said: "The band have fond memories of numerous musical engagements and adventures over the years, including playing on the top deck of a bus in Middlesbrough, although it was Pat Phoenix on the following vehicle that really stopped the show."

Other highlights include three days on the bandstand at the Great Yorkshire Show, and the Oxford Union - when the bandleader wedged the bus into an underground car park.
