FIRE crews in three appliances were called to Corus Redcar after a fire in a mobile coke screening machine at about 8.30pm on Tuesday.

The cause of the fire was believed to have been a leak of hydraulic oil onto a hot exhaust manifold. Plant personnel spotted the fire in the machine, which was not in use at the time, and called the fire brigade. Firefighters spent 45 minutes dealing with the blaze.

MUSICAL POETRY: Teesside's industrial landscapes will be highlighted in a programme of poetry and music. Hartlepool's Central Library is hosting the Ek Zuban: One Voice event, tomorrow. It is a collaboration between poets Bob Beagrie and Andy Willoughby, and blues musician Shaun Lennox. The evening starts at 7.15pm. Tickets, costing £1, are available from the library.

LIFEBOATS STALL: A fundraising stall for the RNLI, stocked with babywear, has been organised by Joyce Dowding. It will be held tomorrow in Redcar Central Library, from 10am to 3.30pm.

BOOK SIGNING: Author Marion Husband will sign copies of her latest paperback, Say You Love Me, at The Guisborough Bookshop, on Saturday, from 11.30am. The North-East writer lives in the Tees Valley and her latest book contains many Teesside characters.

ON SONG: Stan Webb's Chicken Shack will perform at Guisborough R'n'B Club, at the town's football club, in Howlbeck Road, on Saturday, March 3. Supporting the group will be Acoustic Wax Jackets. Tickets cost £12, on 01287-634365.

Board update: The next board meeting of South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust takes place at 10am, in room 22, academic centre, The James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, on Tuesday, March 6.

COFFEE time: St Paul's Church, in Cambridge Road, Thornaby, is holding a coffee morning today, from 10.15am. All proceeds will go towards church funds.

GUILD MEETS: Guisborough and District branch of the Embroiders' Guild meets in Sunnyfield House, Westgate, on Saturday, March 3, at 2pm. The speaker is Yvonne Brown, who will talk about the work of a textile artist.
