THE BOSS of County Durham's NHS hospitals is to leave his post it was announced today.
John Saxby is to step down as chief executive of the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust to take up a post in Lancashire.
Mr Saxby has been in charge County Durham and Darlington's hospitals for 14 years.
In that time he has overseen the creation of two new hospitals, in Durham City and Bishop Auckland, and he recently helped to secure foundation status for the Trust.
However, he has faced strong criticism for reducing bed numbers at Darlington and Bishop Auckland.
Tony Waites, the Trust chairman, said: "John leaves us with a great legacy of achievement. He leaves us on a high note, having helped us to secured Foundation Trust status. He will be missed because of the leadership he has brought to our hospitals during times of change."
Mr Saxby will leave his post at the end of May.
