This week's wine is a light golden colour, the bouquet is of lavender and rose petals.

On the palate there's the typical lychees taste. It has a sweet edge to it - three on the dry sweet scale and with 13 per cent alcohol this makes for quite a full-bodied wine.

It's aromatic and has a strong tasting finish. Should be ideal with oriental dishes as it is a little spicy and will even go with a light curry. Serve it lightly chilled for the best effect.

The wine's provenance is Alsace. The vineyards are actually between Marienheim and Thann, running along the lower slopes of the Vosges mountains.

It's quite warm here for the latitude and the gewürztraminer grape has no difficulty in ripening - 13 per cent alcohol is not uncommon. What is a little unusual is the fact that this Alsace gewurtz is only £4.99.

The secret here is that it comes from Aldi whose 320 stores seem to be able to turn out unusual wines 20 per cent cheaper than the equivalent in most other stores.
