A PUBLIC inquiry to decide the fate of a derelict school has been adjourned until next month.

Developer Westnew Management, which owns the former Easington Colliery Primary School, in Seaside Lane, wants to demolish the Edwardian building and replace it with a residential complex.

But the demolition of the grade II-listed building has been opposed by English Heritage and The Victorian Society.

Acumen Trust, a start-up business charity, which believes it could transform the premises into a multi-purpose centre, is also opposed to the proposal.

The developer has the support of Easington District Council, and MP John Cummings. Residents say the building should be knocked down.

The inquiry is being conducted by Government planning inspector Dannie Onn and the final decision will rest with Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Ruth Kelly.

The inquiry wil be on Friday, March 23.
