A NAME has been chosen for a countryside site following a poll of visitors.

Hundreds of people who attended a countryside community day event were asked to choose a name for the site, which is between Aykley Heads cycle track and the East Coast Main Line railway in Durham City.

Aykley Woods was the most popular.

During the day, visitors planted trees and flowers and made bird boxes.

The trees and shrubs that were planted are expected to provide nest sites and food for greenfinch, linnet, bullfinch and song thrush.

Ian Armstrong, wildlife and ecology officer with Durham County Council, which is developing the site, said: "Work on site so far has created two ponds and an area of wet grassland, 15,000 trees have been planted, paths cut, wildflower seeds scattered and steps installed.

"In the near future, three more ponds will be created, wildflower areas will be extended, and paths and seats installed."
