THE chip pan safety message has taken another step forward, with 74 households taking advantage of reduced prices for deep fat fryers.
Electrical retailer Currys supported Cleveland Fire Brigade's Ban the Pan campaign by selling products for £9.99 and displaying safety leaflets and posters.
Due to the success of the scheme, the company has extended the offer across its stores on Teesside until this weekend.
Fire safety officer Ed Parrish said: "We are delighted that a retail store has backed our campaign to get rid of chip pans. Thanks to Currys' help, 74 people will be safer from fire by purchasing a thermostatically controlled deep fat fryer rather than using a chip pan to cook their chips."
Chip pans cause nearly 8,200 fires in the UK each year, resulting in 31 deaths and nearly 3,000 injuries, which could have been avoided if they had chosen to cook their chips in a microwave, oven or deep fat fryer.
