TALENTED students took multitasking to a new level as they took part in a bilingual bake-off.

Fifteen students from Hummersknott Academy, in Darlington, went head-to-head with dozens of pupils from across the region in the Great International Bake Off, which saw teams of budding chefs film themselves cooking a recipe while narrating the process in a foreign language.

The students then travelled to Sunderland University where the films were shown and a winning team was chosen.

The Hummersknott pupils made a Yule log, vegetable pesto soup and a Tarte Tatin, which was crowned the overall winner of the overall competition.

The winning team were presented with a trophy and an extravagant chocolate cake.

Celia Howarth, subject leader for French said: “We are all really proud of the students.

“The year 9 students involved had great fun developing their spoken French and many would like to continue using languages in their future careers.

“The Routes into Languages competition gave them an excellent opportunity to see how their knowledge of French can be employed in different areas, and their fluency in French was excellent.”

The competition was hosted by Routes into Languages which aims to encourage people to study languages in a variety of innovative ways.
