IT was a page-turner worth waiting for at Staindrop Church of England Primary School after a new outdoor reading hub was unveiled to the children for the first time.

The ‘Book Nook’, which aims to encourage the youngsters to read outside of the classroom, was officially opened after the Friends of Staindrop Primary School raised more than £3,500 to create the space in the school’s garden.

Children’s author and former pupil, Helen Stephens, officially opened the reading hut which is decked out with its very own book tree, storyteller’s chair and imitation grass.

And the school’s 180 pupils were just as excited to see the finished product which has been hidden from view for today’s grand unveiling.

Headteacher, Steven Whelerton, said: “It’s a really informal, creative space that will be available to all the children in the breaks so they can go in there pick up a book and chill out.”

Mr Whelerton said the children also came up with ideas to furnish the hut including having outdoor patio furniture and a bistro sign to display the book of the day which the younger children can have read to them by the older ones.

Parents and businesses also chipped in by donating paint as well as their time and skills.

“It’s been a real community effort and that’s what makes it so special,” he added.
