A PRIMARY school is celebrating after an impressive football season.

The year five and six side at Tanfield Lea Community Primary School, near Stanley, has had a trio of successes on the field.

The youngsters topped the Gordon Walton League after playing against schools in its area, the Eddie Embleton Memorial Trophy and the Jack Dodds Trophy in the Derwentside Champions League.

The year four team is also through to the County Cup finals next Wednesday and is playing against teams from Peterlee, Chester-le-Street and Sunderland.

Headteacher Kay Hemmings said: “They have certainly excelled themselves this year. We are very proud of them.”

The teams are trained by year six teacher Mark Temple and year one teacher Joe Durham.

Mr Temple said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have such a talented group of players. They have very worked hard. Besides their talent they have come to training in all weathers and have really gelled as a team.

“We think it is absolutely fantastic and we are chuffed to bits for them.

“A couple of them are already at footballing academies but one player can not carry a team and win a competition. They have all worked together and it is great.”
