A SHELTERED housing complex for people with memory loss problems has opened its doors to the public.

Appleton Lodge in Spennymoor held an open day today (Wednesday, May 20) to raise awareness of dementia, while giving an insight into the service it and other support organisation can offer.

The event, which coincided with Dementia Awareness Week, included a tour or the complex, which comprises 21 flats, as well as communal areas and onsite carers.

Representatives from the Home Group, which owns the building, care providers Dale Care, the Alzheimer’s Society, NHS, Care Connect and other relevant services also attended to offer advice and information.

Appleton Lodge support co-ordinator Louise Miller, said: “I think a lot of people who live in the area don’t know what we do here and we wanted to change that, while bringing together other organisations to network and promote the services available.”

Sally Edwards, housing management worker, added: “We also hope to raise awareness of dementia and improve people’s understanding of it.

“Anyone who couldn’t make it today is welcome to call and we can direct them to the support available.”
