CHILDREN have designed a huge banner urging drivers to slow down outside their school.

Pupils from St Cuthbert’s RCVA in Chester-le-Street organised a competition for classmates to design the pictures and slogans to go on their banner.

The giant display will be put on the fence outside the front of the school to encourage drivers to lower their speed as they pass.

Among the prizes on offer for the competition, which is open to children aged from four to 11, are a £100 voucher from Cestria Cycles, a £30 toy voucher donated by Chester-le-Street Cricket Club, a £25 voucher from Clarks Shoes and local shop Bonbon’s provided traffic light lollipops for every child who entered.

Paul Watson, Durham County Council’s road safety manager, said: “We are delighted to support the school with this project, which is a wonderful example of how a community can come together to tackle a problem in a very positive way.”

Clare Swales, head teacher at St Cuthbert’s RCVA Primary School, added: “We are very proud of the interest the children have taken in this issue.

“The poster designs are great fun, but the message is very serious and we hope that their efforts will have a positive impact on safety for all, on the roads outside of our school.”
