CHILDREN have put the finishing touches to a bed of flowers as part of their city’s bid for Britain In Bloom glory.

Pupils from Gilesgate Primary School joined Durham County Council workers on Thursday (4 June) to plant flowers, as part of Durham’s bid to win gold in successive years in the regional Northumbria in Bloom and national Britain in Bloom competitions.

The carpet bed, planted on Durham Gilesgate roundabout in the city centre, celebrates 30 years of the ‘Durham in Bloom’ campaign.

Throughout the summer months, it will welcome thousands of visitors and residents entering the city.

Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships said: “It’s wonderful to mark 30 years of Durham in Bloom and to acknowledge the fantastic contribution that everyone has made to transform the environment. It has been a true community effort.’’

The carpet bed will form part of the displays to be seen by the Northumbria in Bloom judges when they visit the city on July 15 and the Britain in Bloom judges whose tour of inspection takes place on August 5.

The Durham in Bloom team are hoping to repeat their success in 2014 when the city attained gold medal and overall category winner in Northumbria in Bloom in the large town section and a gold medal in Britain in Bloom.
