A STUDENT from Barnard Castle has impressed judges at a national design competition ran by iconic British motorcycle manufacturer Triumph.

Teesdale Sixth Former Tom Steen has been selected to show his final A level design and technology project in The Triumph Design Awards which aim to inspire design engineers of the future.

He was challenged to make good use of waste materials routinely produced by Triumph.

After identifying key components that are expensive to recycle if deemed inadequate to use in a bike he used them to build a counter top display unit for use in dealerships and exhibitions.

Teacher Nigel Wilford said: “What’s really great about Tom’s product is just how well it embodies Triumph’s ethos- their commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, style and sustainability.

"The finish of the product is superb, making excellent use of traditional craft skills, modern manufacturing processes and sustainable materials such as aluminium and glass."

The final judging will take place at Triumph's headquarters, in Leicestershire, next month (July) when Tom will present his design to panel of judges.

Prizes include internships and a university degree funded by Triumph Motorcycles.

Tom is the most recent design and technology from Teesdale tipped as a future talent.

Keiran Brookes and Ben Lowson, who now works as a design engineer for Dyson, were recognised in past national competitions.

Co principal Simon Maguire said: "It’s great to know that Teesdale Sixth Form College has a growing reputation for nurturing creative talent; helping young designers develop skills that secure exciting and fulfilling careers."
