Progress to bring a food giant to County Durham next to Lidl and B&M has moved a step forward after it was confirmed that renovation work had begun on the project.

Last year, plans for a Greggs drive-thru were confirmed after proposals were submitted to Durham County Council from the big-name brand to move into an old petrol filling station on Delves Lane in Consett.

In the designs, Greggs said that it would renovate the petrol station to make a standalone drive-thru with 14 car park spaces for customers.

Within plans that were submitted to Durham County Council, drawings showed that the drive-thru would be located near both B&M and Lidl, who both have stores on Delves Lane.

The proposals, which were approved by Durham County Council in July of this year, included menu screens at the drive-thru, ordering points, and an inside section with seating.

It's believed that the new Greggs store will bring 18 staff, which include a mix of part-time and full-time employees.

After the plans were approved, small sections of building work have been included over the last few months.

So far, it's unknown when the Greggs drive-thru will be opening, due to no official confirmation from the big brand.
