Hartlepool pensioner stabbed in the heart by asylum seeker

A pensioner was allegedly murdered when an ‘Islamic extremist’ stabbed him in the heart.

Terence Carney was attacked just minutes after Ahmed Ali Adil had repeatedly stabbed his housemate while he was sleeping.

The 70-year-old suffered six stab wounds – three causing serious damage to his heart, lungs, and liver – when the 45-year-old asylum seeker came across the grandfather as he took his usual early morning walk.

Teesside Crown Court heard how Adil circled back on Mr Carney after he passed on the street before launching the fatal attack last October.

The killing was captured on CCTV and the pensioner could be heard screaming ‘No, no, no’ as the Moroccan stabbed him repeatedly.

Dr Nigel Cooper, a Home Office pathologist, said Mr Carney died as a result of significant blood loss predominantly caused by the stab to the heart.

Jurors heard how a kitchen knife recovered from the suspect was more than likely used in the attack with some of the injuries suffered by the pensioner being up to 8cm deep.

Armed officers managed to track down the suspect as he wandered around Hartlepool town centre in the early hours of October 15.

The court was shown body-worn footage of Adil when he was taken into custody at Middlesbrough police station.

The footage caught the accused repeatedly making religious comments in Arabic and praising Allah.

Earlier in the trial, the court heard how Adil attempted to murder Javed Nouri after he forced his way into his bedroom and plunged a knife into him as he slept whilst shouting "Allahu Akbar".

One witness, Mohammed Karimi told jurors how he saw ‘blood everywhere’ when he came downstairs in the shared house on Wharton Terrace in Hartlepool.

Mr Karimi, who described the defendant as holding extreme Islamic views, said there was some ill-feeling between the pair after Alid learned that Mr Nouri had converted to Christianity from the Islamic faith.

The asylum seeker had been reported to police and housing managers as his behaviour became increasingly concerning when he carried a knife in the shared property, jurors had heard.

The Judge, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb DBE, had told the jury that the accused accepts the facts of the case but they will be asked to consider Alid’s state of mind at the time of the alleged offences.

Alid, of Wharton Terrace, Hartlepool, denies he murdered the pensioner.

He also denies the attempted murder of his housemate and two charges of assaulting an emergency worker.

The trial continues.
