Four branches of Marks & Spencer are set to open or close in the North East over the coming months, as the department store business goes through restructuring.

Earlier this year, the business outlined goals to put more focus on its food-only stores, leading to both closures and new openings nationwide.

We have pulled together a list of closing dates, and new openings, so you can stay in the know with the nation's favourite store.

Sunderland, High Street West

The brand's Sunderland store will close its doors for the final time later this month, with its day of operations on May 25.

Locals have expressed their dismay that the store, which has been open for several decades, will be shutting, with the nearest branches in Washington and Newcastle.

Washington, The Galleries

In Washington, M&S's Simply Food store will close on May 29, but not to worry for avid fans, as a replacement will be open straight away.

A new M&S store, located only a few doors down at Washington's shopping complex, The Galleries, is set to open just in time for summer shopping. The location, which has cost the chain millions to construct, will open on May 30. The new store will have a clothing and homeware department.

Hexham, Maidens Way

The closure date for M&S in Hexham, located on Maidens Walk, has also been earmarked for closure, but the date has yet to be announced.

Regional manager Philip Barker-Thomson said staff would be offered alternative roles where possible if the proposals go ahead.
