Thrown in at the deep end

WHEN Philip Harnby signed up to become an assistant leader in the explorer scouts he had no idea he would be literally thrown in at the deep end.

Mr Harnby, 21, joined members of the St George Explorer Scout Unit from Bishop Auckland, for a scuba diving session at the town's swimming pool only to find out that he was turning up for his official welcoming and a ceremony that was to be carried out under water.

The ceremony at Woodhouse Close Leisure Complex was arranged as a surprise by his unit and Bishop Auckland Sub Aqua Club. Mr Harnby, along with District Commissioner Ian Johnson and fellow assistant explorer scout leader David Henry, donned scuba diving equipment for the event.

Mr Johnson said that the unit always looked for alternative fun ways of welcoming new leaders and said this time they had outdone themselves with the element of surprise.
