TALENTED young linguists donned the costume of famous detectives for a day of clue solving designed to enhance their skills.

The nine and ten-year-olds from six feeder primary schools to Park View Community School in Chester-le-Street have been learning French for three years.

The 38 youngsters took part in a special day at Durham County Cricket Club that was designed to develop their language learning strategies. They were asked to decipher snippets of text in languages such as Welsh, German and Swedish and try to solve clues in various languages.

Primary French co-ordinator Elaine Bulmer said: “These children are very good. They hopefully will be the linguists of the future.”
