A POLICE sergeant is to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats in memory of a much-loved relative who died of cancer.

David Algeo, from Chester-le- Street, hopes to cycle the 1,017 miles in 15 days later this month, without the aid of a support vehicle.

The 40-year-old will be pedalling in aid of the Marie Curie Hospice, in Newcastle, where his wife’s cousin, Simon McNulty, spent time before he died.

Mr McNulty, of Denton, Newcastle, was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in 2005 and died 14 months later, aged 34.

Sgt Algeo said: “Simon was a smashing lad. Since his death his parents, Alan and Eileen, have worked tirelessly to raise funds to support the Marie Curie Hospice in Newcastle.

“It’s a terrific cause and it’s great knowing that all the money I raise will be used to provide specialist nursing care and support to cancer sufferers and their families.”

Sgt Algeo, a part-time sergeant with Durham Police who also runs a stress management training company, began training for the ride in January and has been cycling 25 hours a week since June.

He hopes to raise £1,017 - £1 for every mile pedalled. To sponsor Sgt Algeo, visit original.justgiving.com/davidalgeo
