FIRE crews are dealing with a chemical spill in Northallerton, North Yorkshire.

The incident is at Standard Way industrial Estate and emergency services were called to the scene at 6am.

"The incident was made up to make pumps ten for additional gas tight suits, but is now being scaled down," a spokesman for North Yorkshire fire and rescue said.

"Approximately 600 litres of adhesive in a container, which is overheating due to a chemical reaction, is causing some vaporisation. "Crews are cooling the container reducing the effect."

Crews are working with other agencies and specialist advisors.

"A 400m cordon is in place at this time, and this is causing disruption to traffic in the area," the spokesman added.

"Although the risk to health is thought to be low, residents in the nearby area are advised to keep their doors and windows closed."
