POLICE are warning drivers to take extra care after high winds brought down trees across North Yorkshire and County Durham.

The North Yorkshire and Durham forces both reported a series of incidents caused by the weather, with the Darlington and Barnard Castle areas being particularly badly affected.

Roof tiles were blown from a house in Barnard Castle, and a car hit a fallen tree at Bishopton, but there were not believed to be any injuries.

A spokeswoman for Durham Police described conditions in parts of the county as "absolutely wild" and urged people to take extra care when out and about.

The high winds are expected to continue on Friday, with the Met Office warning of gusts of up to 70mph for the North-East.
