The North Yorkshire Credit Union has announced its collapse just weeks after it assured members it was only suspending loans temporarily and was not in any danger of going bust.

But today proved the union - which provided savings accounts and loans to more than 5,000 people in the county - could not be saved and talks are already taking place to bring South Yorkshire Credit Union into North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire County Council forked out loans of £200,000 to help North Yorkshire Credit Union establish itself and a spokesperson for the council said it did not expect to be able to claim that money back after the collapse.

Savers have been assured their money is safe, and will be contacted by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme about how to collect savings and where to make future loan payments to.
