Witnesses say there were five men in #darlington jewellery armed robbery. All in balaclavas armed with sledgehammers and a knife.

STORE RAID: Police have been called to D&H Jeweller's, in Queen Street Arcade, Darlington, following reports of an armed robbery. Reporter Steven Hugill is at the scene for us and says two windows appear to have been smashed with a sledge hammer. He is also speaking to eyewitnesses.
The incident happened shortly before 5pm. It is unclear at this stage what, if anything, the raiders escaped with. More on this story as it develops.

NHS Direct is to close most of its call centres with the loss of hundreds of nursing and other jobs, union leaders said today.
Unison said 24 out of 30 sites, including one in Newcastle, will close at the service, which employs 1,500 frontline nursing and other professional staff.
