A LASTING reminder of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee has been planted at the gateway to Chester-le-Street town centre.
A Royal oak sapling now stands on a grassed area next to the Wicket Gate pub at the southern end of Front Street.
It was planted today (November 16) in a ceremony attended by the town’s Area Action Partnership (AAP), Chester-le-Street Rotary Club, pupils from Newker Primary School and other organisations.
The AAP and the Rotary Club have worked together on jubilee woodland planting projects in the area and the oak planting is the culmination of this work.
The club paid for the tree and the AAOP for the planting. A plaque will be erected in due course.
Derek Snaith, of the AAP, said: “It is a permanent feature for the town and a lasting reminder of the jubilee.”
Derek Briggs, chairman of the town’s Central Residents Association, said: “It looks quite nice.
“It is in a prominent position and you will be able to see it as you come up Ropery Lane to the roundabout by the hospital. “It is good that we are getting something like this in the town centre.”
