CRICKET coach Geoff Cook will flick the switch to turn on a town’s Christmas lights next week.

The Durham County Cricket Club coach will be joined by Durham County Council chairman Linda Marshall to turn on the lights in Chester-le-Street on Friday,. December 7.

Santa Claus will arrive on a penny farthing bicycle and there will be music from the Craghead Colliery Band.

Andrew Megginson, co-ordinator of the Chester-le-Street and District Area Action Partnership, which has organised the event, said: "This is going to be a fantastic chance for the people of Chester-le-Street to come together to celebrate the start of this year's festivities.

"We're delighted that Geoff Cook can join us and Santa is arriving in true Beamish style this year."

The fun starts in the town’s Market Place at 3.30pm, with the lights due to be turned on around 4pm.
