FATHER Christmas arrived in Victorian style to light up Chester-le-Street for Christmas today (Friday, December 7).
The big man himself arrived in town on a penny farthing - his marvellous beard keeping his face warm on the cold ride.
Durham County Cricket Club coach Geoff Cook and Durham County Council chairman Councillor Linda Marshall were on hand to help Santa flick the switch to start the festivities.
Andrew Meggison, co-ordinator of the event, said: “We’re delighted that Geoff Cook can join us and Santa arrived in true Beamish style this year.”
Craghead Colliery Band were on the scene to keep spirits high.
