NEAR MISS: A 50-year-old cottage had a near miss this morning, when a heavy goods vehicle skidded towards it down an icy hill. The incident, in Middleton One Row, near Darlington, happened shortly before 7am today. The driver apparently lost control in icy conditions, before the vehicle came to a halt on a grass verge, perilously close to the property's front wall.

Simpson said: "It is hard to take defeat for the fans, but I think they can see it is just not happening for us.

"They can see we are working 100 per cent, every one of us. That is what they want to see from people in a Newcastle shirt and they can tell we are not getting the luck."
