PRIMARY school pupils donned festive knitwear when they took part in a special charity day.

About 270 youngsters at the Bullion Lane Primary School in Chester-le-Street, today (Friday, December 14) joined in Christmas Jumper Day in aid of Save the Children.

They paid £1 each for the privilege of leaving the standard issue school jersey at home and coming in something more seasonal.

Headteacher Sarah Barningham said: “There are prizes for the sparkliest jumper and the most festive jumper.

“They ranged from knitted jumpers to sweatshirts with baubles and tinsel and lights hanging off them.

“Everyone apart from the nursery took part. They are all looking very bright and colourful.

“It sounded a bit of fun, a bit different and for a good cause so everyone, including the staff, have got involved.”
