DURHAM Police has recruited nine new Police and Community Support Officers (PCSOs).

The group will be trained at the force headquarters Aykley Heads, in Durham before taking to the streets in April.

Chief Constable Mike Barton said: “This is excellent news not only for communities, but also for the individuals concerned who will be starting their career with an excellent police force.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Ron Hogg added: “I am determined that despite government funding cuts we will continue to maintain Police Community Support Officers on the streets of County Durham and Darlington.

“I know how much businesses and communities value and appreciate the work that they do. They fulfil a vital role in terms of visibility, and will assist in maintaining our neighbourhood police teams.”
