PUB regulars raised £5,000 for Macmillan Nurses with an Iron Man challenge. Drinkers from the Whitehills pub in Chester-le-Street put themselves through a tough test involving running, cycling and swimming.

The sponsorship they attracted, the proceeds of a music night and a donation of £400 made the total £5,000.

Organiser Tony Callaghan said: “Nearly three years ago a guy close to us died and we raised £9,000 for the Great North and the Yorkshire Air Ambulances.

“We decided to miss a year and then we decided to do another fundraiser.

“We decided that Macmillan was a great charity.”

Twelve people swam a mile, 17 cyclists rode 17 miles and nine runners ran over six miles.

Mr Callaghan said he was delighted with the total raised and said that another event would be held in 2014.
