A CHESTER-le-Street school is inviting people to an evening of stargazing.

The Hermitage Academy, Waldridge Lane, will host the astronomy extravaganza on Thursday, February 7.

Dr Andy Newsam, Director of the National Schools’ Observatory, from Liverpool University, and members of the Durham Astronomical Society and Durham University Astronomical Society will be involved.

The event starts at 3.30pm with an astronomical discussion and question and answer session and will be followed at 6pm by a two-hour stargazing sesion.

It will feature a presentation from Dr Andy Newsam and a range of astronomical demonstrations.

Refreshments will be available and all are welcome, from the complete beginner to the enthusiastic amateur.

Science teacher Gavin Jenkins said: "We are really excited about the evening.

"We are lucky to have Dr Newsam visiting us from Liverpool University as part of his National Educational Astro Tour.

"We would like to welcome students and members of the local community to learn more about the night skies.

"The academy is always keen to make links with people who use science in their lives, it is important to allow our pupils to see how their classroom studies have a real purpose in life."
