PUPILS have been solving the mystery of a missing alien as part of a drive to make them better writers.

Forty-eight youngsters aged eight and nine at Pelton Community Primary School, near Chester-le-Street, are following clues to find the kidnapped extra-terrestrial, Harold.

Harold, a character created for literacy lessons last year, and this year the youngsters are having to gather evidence to find out what has happened to him.

Missing posters and various clues have been left around the school and the local PCSO, Claire Laidler, is taking part to give the event added realism,

The children are writing reports that will feature in mock newspapers and TV bulletins about Harold’s disappearance.

“We are trying to inspire the children to be good writers and to be writers for life, ’’ said teacher Julie Short.

The mystery is expected to be cleared up on Friday when the culprit will be brought to justice.
