Association looks at benefits shake-up

THE Government’s welfare reforms are the subject of a conference in Chester-le-Street this week.

The County Durham Residents Association will hold the event on Friday (March 15) in the town’s Civic Centre, Newcastle Road.

Association secretarty Stephen Hann said: “The theme of the conference is the upcoming Welfare Reform and the impact the proposed reforms are going to have on our communities and on individuals within those communities.

“The changes are radical and will affect people from all walks of life. “We all have to be as well informed as possible both for ourselves and for the groups/organisations we represent.

The event starts with registration and coffee between 9.30 to 10am.

Speakers will include association and chairman Andrew Bowman and vice-chairman John Kelley. Phil Hanns, Principal Welfare Rights Officer with Durham County Council, who will outline how the changes will affect individuals and communities.

Rob Jeffreys, of Cestria Communiy Housing, will talk about the impact on tenants and their landlords, and Pat Wanless,of Dale and Valley Homes, will outline the Impact on rural communities. There will be a buffet lunch.
