A YOUNG carer hopes her charity swim will help the carers’ group that supports her.

Georgia Williams, 12, of Birtley, is doing the Great North Swim, in Lake Windermere, to raise money and awareness for Gateshead Young Carers.

Her father Darren developed epilepsy six years ago and Georgia often has to look after him when he has seizures.

The keen swimmer, who is a member of Chester-le-Street Swimming Club, hopes to raise about £1,000 to pay for a trip for Gateshead Young Carers.

The group provides support, help and activities for youngsters who care for a relative.

Georgia will swim half a mile of the lake on Saturday, June 14.

Her mother Helen said: “She has only been swimming for a year. She is competitive, she does galas and is quite a good swimmer.

“She has watched it on TV for the last few years and really wanted to do it. She is really looking forward to it.”

Mrs Williams, who has another daughter, Eva, eight, said Georgia wanted to re-pay the group for the support it had given her.

So far she has raised about £500 - or £600 when Gift Aid is added.
